Each year, Recruiter magazine publishes the Fast 50 - a ranking of the UK's fastest-growing staffing agencies measured by compound annual growth rate (CAGR) over a three-year period. The 2023 list offered some clear signals about where growth is happening in the industry and what is driving it.
The top performers
Understanding Recruitment topped the technology sector with a 97% CAGR - the highest on the list. They specialise in software engineering and data roles, two areas where demand has consistently outpaced supply.
ICG Global came second with a 96.2% CAGR, operating in healthcare. The post-pandemic surge in healthcare staffing demand has created sustained growth opportunities for specialist agencies in this space.
Xcede entered the top three focusing on renewables and technology - a combination that reflects two of the most actively hiring sectors in the current market.
Strong climbers
WM Global Consultancy made one of the biggest jumps on the list - from 46th place to 6th - operating across industrial, automotive and aviation sectors. Their diversification appears to be a genuine strength.
Fawkes Reece moved from 31st to 7th, specialising in construction with a 45.5% CAGR. The UK's ongoing infrastructure investment has created sustained demand for construction recruitment at all levels.
HR Go climbed from 35th to 8th, operating across multiple sectors with a 44.1% CAGR - evidence that well-run generalist agencies can still compete with specialists when their operations are tight.
What the fastest-growing agencies have in common
Looking across the top 20, a few patterns emerge consistently:
- Clear sector specialisation - the vast majority focus on one or two verticals rather than covering everything.
- Strong digital presence - most have invested in their websites and LinkedIn activity in recent years.
- Structured business development - they are not relying purely on referrals and relationships; they have outbound systems in place.
- Invested leadership - the agencies at the top of the list tend to have directors who are visibly active in the market, publishing content and building personal brands.
Growth in recruitment is rarely accidental. The agencies on this list made deliberate decisions about who they serve, how they position themselves and how they market their services. That is exactly the kind of clarity we help agencies find through our launchpad process.
What this means for your agency
If your agency is not growing at the pace you want, it is worth asking honestly: are you as clear about your market position as the agencies at the top of this list? Do you have a marketing system that is generating leads while your team focuses on delivery? And are you visible enough in your sector to attract inbound interest?
If the answer to any of those is no, those are the areas to focus on first.
